How to Choose the Best Photo for Personalised Gifts

Personalised Mush Cush face cushion printed from a bright, front-facing photo

Picking the best photo for personalised gifts is the bit nobody thinks about until they're scrolling through 4,000 pictures on their phone at midnight, trying to find one where Dad isn't mid-sneeze. This guide is for anyone about to order a face cushion, photo blanket or any other photo gift from us, and it walks you through exactly what makes a photo print brilliantly (and what makes it print like a police e-fit).

We print, cut, sew and finish our gifts at our family factory in Yorkshire, so we see a lot of photos come through. Here's everything we'd tell a friend before they hit upload.

Why the Photo Matters More Than You Think

A personalised gift is only ever as good as the picture you give us. Our printers are lovely, but they're not magicians. If the photo is dark, blurry or tiny, the finished gift will be too, just bigger and softer.

Most of our photo gifts are printed using dye sublimation, where the ink is turned into a gas and bonded into the fabric so it doesn't crack or peel. We explain the whole process in our post on how our personalised products are made, and if you fancy a deep dive into fabrics, our guide to polyester vs cotton explains why polyester takes a print so well.

The key thing to know is this: on some products, such as our pet face cushions, we use a "super black" sublimation ink for quality, and it tends to darken colours slightly. So a photo that already looks a bit gloomy on your phone can look gloomier once it's printed. Light, bright, high-quality images give you the best result every time.

The Golden Rules for Choosing the Best Photo for Personalised Gifts

Whatever you're making, these five rules will do most of the heavy lifting.

1. Go for good, even light

Natural daylight is your best friend. A photo taken near a window or outside on a bright but overcast day gives soft, even light with no harsh shadows. Avoid photos taken under orange kitchen lights at 11pm, dimly lit pub snaps and anything where half the face is in shadow. If you can see the colour of their eyes clearly, you're on the right track.

2. Sharp beats sentimental (usually)

We know, that slightly blurry photo from the wedding is your favourite. But if it's out of focus on your phone, it will be out of focus on a cushion. Zoom in on the face before you choose it. Can you see individual eyelashes or strands of hair? Brilliant. Does it go fuzzy and blocky? Keep looking.

3. Use the original, not a screenshot

Screenshots, photos saved from messaging apps and pictures pulled off social media are usually compressed, which means detail has been thrown away to make the file smaller. Ask whoever took the photo to send you the original, or use a file-sharing option that keeps full quality. Our product pages say it best: high quality images work 10x better.

4. Face the camera

For face-shaped gifts in particular, a photo looking straight at the camera works far better than a side profile or a three-quarter angle. Both eyes visible, head fairly level, no hands over the face. Big grins, gurning and silly expressions are absolutely encouraged.

5. Nothing in the way

Sunglasses, hats pulled low, a pint glass in front of the chin, another person's ear creeping into the frame: all of these can get in the way. Our editor lets you crop and adjust, but it's easier to start with a clean shot.

Choosing a Photo for Face Cushions

Personalised Mush Cush face cushion printed with a photo of a smiling face

Our Mush Cush® face cushions are cut to the shape of the face, so the photo does a lot of work here. The personalised Mush Cush measures 13" x 10" (31cm x 25cm), is made from soft touch faux suede, and lets you choose a background colour and personalise the back too.

A few face-cushion specific tips:

  • Don't over-zoom. Our product pages note that the bigger the face, the more distorted the final cushion will look. Use the edit menu to size the face so it looks natural rather than stretched.
  • Include the whole head. Make sure the top of the hair and the chin are both in the photo. A forehead chopped off at the eyebrows makes a very odd-looking cushion.
  • Keep the background simple. A plain wall or sky makes it easier to see the outline of the face.
  • Play to the laugh. Face cushions are meant to be funny. A double chin, a wink or a "caught off guard" expression often makes a better gift than a perfect posed portrait.

If you want twice the fun, the double-sided Mush Cush lets you put a different photo on each side, which is perfect for a "before and after" or "him and her" joke.

Choosing a Photo of Your Pet

Personalised pet face cushion made from a photo of a dog

Pets are notoriously bad at sitting still for photos, and they have absolutely no interest in your lighting. Still, a great pet photo is the secret to a brilliant pet face cushion. These come in five shapes, from around 30cm x 32cm for Shape 1 and Shape 2 down to 32cm x 27cm for Shape 4, so you can pick the outline that best fits your pet's face. You'll find more backs and finishes in our pet face cushions collection, including tartan, paw prints and fur effects.

Our tips for pet photos:

  • Get down to their level. Shooting from above makes heads look huge and noses tiny. Crouch down so the camera is level with their eyes.
  • Use a treat or a squeaky toy. Hold it just above the camera so they look straight at you, ears up and alert.
  • Be extra careful with dark-coated pets. Black labradors and black cats are gorgeous but tricky. Shoot them in good daylight so the detail in their fur shows up, and avoid any photo where their face disappears into shadow. Remember that the print may come out slightly darker than your screen.
  • Watch for red or glowing eyes. Flash photos of pets often give them a slightly demonic look. Lovely for Halloween, less so for Nan's sofa.

Choosing Photos for Blankets and Collages

Personalised photo collage fleece blanket with family photos

Blankets give you much more space, which brings its own challenge. A photo that looked fine on a 10 inch cushion now has to stretch across a lot more fabric. Our create your own photo blanket comes in two sizes, Baby (75cm x 75cm) and Standard (150cm x 150cm), and is made from 370gsm ultra plush fleece, printed with water-based inks.

Single-photo blankets

If you're using one photo across the whole blanket, resolution really matters. Pick your sharpest, highest-quality original. Landscape scenes, family group shots and holiday photos all work well, as long as they're not tiny files. If your photo looks pixelated when you zoom in on your phone, it will look pixelated on a blanket.

Collage blankets

The photo collage fleece blanket and designs like the soft grey 9 photo blanket are more forgiving, because each photo is smaller. That makes them ideal when you've got lots of good-but-not-perfect pictures. To make a collage look its best:

  • Mix it up. Combine close-ups, group shots and a couple of landscapes so it doesn't look repetitive.
  • Keep the brightness similar. One very dark photo surrounded by bright ones will stand out for the wrong reasons.
  • Tell a story. Baby photos through to graduation, a year of family days out, or every dog you've ever owned all make a collage feel thoughtful rather than random.
  • Check the crop. Collage spaces may be square, so make sure nobody important ends up trimmed off the edge.

One honest note from our product pages: you may see small flecks of white in the print on some of our fleece blankets. That's down to the fabric and the printing process rather than your photo.

Choosing Photos for Photo Cubes and Square Cushions

Personalised photo cube cushion showing baby photos on each side

Our 10 inch photo cube cushion has a photo on each face, so it's a lovely way to show off a set of related pictures, such as a baby's first year or a group of grandchildren. Because every side is square, choose photos where the subject sits nicely in the middle of the frame, with a little space around them. Very tall or very wide photos will need heavy cropping. See more in our photo cube cushions collection.

For a classic square, the create your own cushion is 45cm x 45cm in soft touch faux suede, with a zip closure and an inner made by us in-house. Our customiser lets you add images, colour and text, so it works for a single favourite photo or a simple design with a name and date. Again, light, high-quality images give the best result. You'll find every shape in our personalised photo cushions range.

Choosing Photos for Wearable Gifts

Personalised 14 photo Snugaroo hooded fleece poncho with custom text

Our Snugaroo™ is a hooded fleece poncho that's half blanket, half hoodie, and the 14 photo Snugaroo lets you fill it with pictures and add personalised text. With 14 spaces, it works just like a collage blanket: variety is good, consistent brightness is better, and each photo should be clear enough to recognise at a glance. The adult version is one size fits most, at approximately 60" x 40". Have a look at the full Snugaroo collection for more designs.

Choosing a Photo for a Memorial Gift

Memorial gifts are different. Often the photo you have is the only one, or the one that means the most, and it may be old, scanned or not especially sharp. That's completely understandable, and a less-than-perfect photo can still make a gift that brings real comfort.

A few gentle suggestions:

  • Scan prints rather than photographing them. If you only have a printed photo, a flatbed scanner will capture far more detail than a phone picture of the print, and avoids glare.
  • If you do use your phone, avoid reflections. Lay the print flat in daylight, turn the flash off and hold the phone directly above it.
  • Choose a design that suits the photo. Smaller photo spaces, such as on a smaller cushion or a collage layout, are kinder to older or lower-quality images than one large print.
  • Take your time. There's no rush to choose. Ask family members if they have a better copy of a favourite picture.

Our pet memory cushion comes in two sizes (26cm x 26cm or 45cm x 45cm), and the smaller size can be a good choice for an older photo. You'll find other thoughtful pieces in our memory collection.

Practical Tips Before You Upload

  • Check the photo guide. Our product pages include a photo guide tab. It's worth a quick read before you upload, especially for face-shaped and pet products.
  • Use the preview. Our designer shows your gift as you build it. Zoom in, check the face, check the edges, and adjust before you add to basket.
  • Brighten gently if you need to. Most phones have a built-in editor. A small boost to brightness or exposure can help a slightly dark photo. Don't overdo it, or skin tones start looking like a tangerine.
  • Skip the filters. Heavy filters, beauty modes and animal-ear stickers rarely print as well as you'd hope.
  • No emojis in text. If you're adding names or messages, stick to letters and numbers. Our software doesn't support emojis.
  • Proofread. Check every name and date twice. We print exactly what you type, so "Happy Brithday" will be immortalised in fleece.
  • Order in good time. Every gift is made to order. With Christmas on the horizon, check the product page and our shipping policy for current production and delivery times before you order.

Things to Consider

Personalised photo gifts are wonderful, but they're not the right choice for every person or every photo. A few honest points:

  • Not everyone loves their own face. A giant Mush Cush of someone's face is hilarious to most people, but if the recipient is camera-shy, a pet cushion, a collage or a design with names and text might go down better.
  • Some photos simply won't print well. Very dark, very small or very blurry images can't be rescued by printing. If you have a choice, always go with the clearer photo.
  • Colours may vary slightly. Screens are bright and backlit, fabric isn't. Expect the printed colours to look a touch different from your phone, and slightly darker on products that use super black ink.
  • Check the size. Face cushions, cube cushions and blankets all come in different sizes, so check the product page to make sure you're picturing the right scale. A Baby blanket at 75cm x 75cm is a very different gift from a Standard 150cm x 150cm one.
  • Allow time. Because everything is printed and sewn to order, you'll need to allow for production as well as delivery. Timings are always shown on the product page and in our shipping policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a photo from my phone?

Yes. Modern phone cameras take excellent photos for personalised gifts. The key is to use the original photo file rather than a screenshot or a version saved from a messaging app or social media, as these are often compressed and lose detail.

What makes the best photo for a face cushion?

A bright, sharp, front-facing photo where the whole head is visible, from the top of the hair to the chin, against a simple background. Avoid zooming in too far, as our product pages note that the bigger the face, the more distorted the cushion can look.

My photo is a bit dark. Will it still work?

It may print darker than you expect, especially on products using super black sublimation ink, such as our pet face cushions. Try a brighter photo if you have one, or gently increase the brightness in your phone's editor before uploading.

Can I use an old printed photo?

Yes. Scan it if you can, or photograph it flat in daylight with the flash off to avoid glare. Older photos often work best on smaller designs or collage layouts.

Can I add text as well as photos?

On many of our products, yes. Our designers let you add names and messages, and some, like the Mush Cush, let you personalise the back too. Please don't use emojis, as our software doesn't support them.

How long will my personalised gift take?

Every gift is made to order in Yorkshire, and timings can change during busy periods. Please check the product page and our shipping policy for the latest production and delivery information.
